“THE BIG TOP” , is a 12 minute work in 8 movements for Brass Quintet inspired by the excitement, thrill and expectation of the circus. Although Mr. Frith has never attended a circus personally, the magic of them was conveyed to him through television shows and films he watched as a boy .

In 2009 he added to the first movement, “Circus Clowns”, which was composed years before and arranged the entire suite for Brass Quintet.

The 8 movements are titled as follows:

4. ELEPHANTS ON PARADE
5. BARE-BACK RIDER

John Frith began his professional training at Dartington College of Arts where he studied with Richard Hall. He continued his musical education at the Guildhall School of Music, studying with Anthony Halstead (horn) and Edmund Rubbra (composition), winning the Brass and School Composition prizes in 1970 and 1971. Until his retirement in December 2007, John worked for Worcestershire Youth Music, as brass teacher and ‘composer in residence’ in county primary schools, developing creative music projects with young children. He has written extensively for wind, brass, strings and voices and has published many pieces, some of which have been professionally recorded and broadcast by the BBC.
