ComposerOnac, DavidBorn in 1984, David’s earliest
compositional success came at
age sixteen (runner-up in the
BBC Young Composer of the
Year with The Butterfly), but it
was towards the end of his
undergraduate degree in Music
at the University of Cambridge
that he became more seriously
interested in composition.
Subsequently he undertook a
year of postgraduate study
with Robin Holloway
(Cambridge), a further year
with Adam Gorb (RNCM) and is
now working towards a PhD in
Composition with Camden
Reeves at the University of
Manchester.
As a pianist, David continues to
play classical repertoire and
jazz, frequently premiering
new works including his own.
In the UK, his work has been
performed in The Crucible
(Sheffield), Kettle’s Yard
(Cambridge), The Royal
Northern College of Music and
The Purcell Room, whilst
international performances
include Fantasia (Sweden),
Four Études (in Brussels by
Peter Donohoe), and …And the
Red Sea… (in the USA and
Europe by bass trombonist
Jonathan Warburton). Whilst
at the University of
Manchester, David has had
pieces performed and
commissioned by the
university’s resident Danel
String Quartet, the BBC
Philharmonic and the
university’s Symphony
Orchestra. All David’s current
projects involve him as both
composer and performer,
ranging from commissions by
Baslow Choir, to violinist Marc
Danel, to a piano concerto for
himself and the University of
Manchester’s showcase
ensemble (Vaganza).
